Building Singing Communities: Working with Children, Youth and New Singers | Anne Schoepp - OCTOBER 23-25, 2026

from $150.00

We are excited to welcome Anne Schoepp to St. Tikhon’s for this special weekend workshop!

Musical communities form and nurture musical people. Musical communities also form bonds among the members because in Orthodoxy, chanting is prayer. When people pray together their relationships deepen, bringing them closer to God and to each other in joy and thanksgiving. Singing is a gift from God for all humans!

Our parish communities can provide opportunities for all levels of involvement and all levels of singers to experience this joy and spiritual growth.

Teaching children to sing sacred hymns and psalms provides Christian formation, education and preparation for future service in the church. With proper direction these children will grow up to be the musical leaders of the next generation, the composers, teachers, chanters, directors, and choral singers.

Singing our Orthodox hymns and psalms is a healing force for all of us that unites and integrates all aspects of our person: mind, body and spirit, forming whole people.

This workshop will provide a framework for working with children, youth and new singers of all ages, including:

  • Tools for training new musicians for pitch and rhythm accuracy

  • Musical games for children

  • Kodaly method for teaching rhythm

  • Moveable-Do Solfege

  • Basic healthy vocal technique

  • An understanding of musical development in children

  • Resources and guidelines for choosing music

  • Curriculum guides that will enable the leader to develop an appropriate program for their own parish culture.

  • Rehearsal techniques that develop musicianship, tight ensemble and quality sound, making rehearsals productive and fun.

  • An opportunity to learn from one another and hear what is working in other parishes.
